Quick Answer: How do you help AI assistants understand your business?

AI search optimization helps search systems and assistants understand your business through clear, accessible and consistent information. Start with useful product pages, accurate pricing, credible evidence and current business details. Keep traditional SEO fundamentals in place. Then test how your brand appears in relevant answers without treating any technique as a guarantee of recommendations.

Customers can ask an assistant to compare products before they ever visit a brand’s website. That changes part of the discovery process. However, it does not remove the human customer or make good marketing obsolete.

In my original essay about the next customer, I argued that brands will need to serve people and the agents helping them decide. This guide focuses on the practical work behind that idea: making your business easy to understand and your claims easy to check.

Connect AI search optimization to human demand

An assistant may narrow a list, explain tradeoffs or gather evidence. The customer still brings preferences, constraints and trust. Therefore, your brand needs both a compelling reason to choose it and clear information that supports that choice.

For example, a shopper might ask for running shoes under $150 with a particular fit and delivery date. A generic promise about innovation does not answer that request. Product specifications, sizing information, stock and delivery terms are more useful.

The same principle applies to B2B marketing. If a buyer needs software for a small sales team, explain team size, relevant workflows, pricing limits and integrations. Also, state where the product is a poor fit. Clear boundaries can improve the quality of inquiries.

Keep the SEO foundations that already matter

Google’s guidance for AI features says existing SEO practices remain relevant. It does not require a special AI file or a new schema type for inclusion in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility also does not guarantee that a page will appear.

Start by checking whether important pages can be crawled and indexed. Next, make them easy to reach through internal links. Keep essential product facts in readable text, even when the page includes video or rich visuals.

Use structured data where it fits the actual page, and ensure it matches what visitors can see. AI search optimization should improve the information, not create a second, contradictory version for machines.

Build product evidence people can verify

Information that helps a buyer assess fit
Buyer questionUseful page content
Is this for someone like me?Specific audiences, use cases and limitations.
What will it cost?Current price, inclusions, conditions and relevant fees.
Will it work with my setup?Supported integrations, requirements and clear documentation.
Why should I believe the claim?Named evidence, methodology and appropriately qualified case studies.
What happens after purchase?Delivery, onboarding, support and return or cancellation terms.

Review claims that appear across your website, sales deck and listings. If one page says a feature is available while another says it is coming soon, resolve the conflict. Also, give someone responsibility for updating time-sensitive information.

Make comparisons fair and useful

A comparison page should explain differences a buyer can act on. Include the date of the review, the options you actually tested and the criteria you used. Avoid declaring every competitor inferior or inventing scores that look objective.

Similarly, case studies should separate observed results from assumptions. Describe the starting point, intervention and measurement period. If you cannot support a number, use a narrower claim instead.

Adjust each channel without abandoning its purpose

AI search optimization belongs inside the broader marketing system. It should not become a reason to stop building demand or serving existing customers. Instead, use each channel to contribute something distinctive.

Search and website

Answer specific questions and maintain a clear source of product truth. Connect related pages so readers can investigate the details.

Content and customer evidence

Publish useful explanations, examples and genuine customer experiences. Make the evidence understandable outside the original campaign.

Create demand and test messages with people. Then use the lessons to improve product explanations and landing pages.

Email and sales

Explain why the message matters to the recipient. Bring recurring objections back into the website and knowledge base.

Assistants may increasingly summarize inboxes or compare offers. However, the exact behavior varies by product, settings and access. Treat sweeping claims about all assistants as hypotheses, not a universal marketing rule.

Measure AI search optimization carefully

Choose a small set of questions that represent real customer needs. Record the assistant, date, market and wording when you test them. Next, inspect the answer for factual accuracy, useful citations and how it describes your offer.

Repeat the checks because answers can vary. A screenshot from one prompt is not a reliable market-share estimate. Also, distinguish brand mentions from visits, qualified inquiries and revenue. Each measures a different part of the journey.

  • Accuracy: Does the answer describe your product correctly?
  • Evidence: Which pages or sources support the description?
  • Fit: Does your brand appear for relevant customer needs?
  • Traffic: What identifiable referrals reach your site?
  • Acquisition: Do those visitors become suitable leads or customers?

When an answer is wrong, fix the underlying source where possible. For example, update an old pricing page or clarify a product limitation. Repeatedly prompting an assistant until it gives a favorable answer does not fix the information problem.

A 30-day AI discovery plan

Week 1: Audit the facts

Choose a priority offer. Check its pricing, capabilities, customer fit and support information across your main pages.

Week 2: Close evidence gaps

Improve FAQs, documentation and case-study explanations. Assign owners to information that changes.

Week 3: Check discoverability

Review indexing, internal links and relevant structured data with your SEO or web team.

Week 4: Review customer outcomes

Repeat the question set and review referral quality. Use the findings to choose the next improvement.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI search optimization replace SEO?

No. Technical accessibility, useful content and clear site structure still matter. Apply those foundations while learning how relevant assistants present your category.

Can structured data guarantee an AI recommendation?

No. Accurate structured data can help eligible systems understand a page, but it does not guarantee indexing, selection or a recommendation.

Should we write only for AI systems?

No. Write for the customer’s decision. Clear facts, honest comparisons and useful explanations help people and can also make information easier for machines to interpret.
